The active phase alternating regularly with the recovery phase will contract your muscle with intensity, in order to solicit the maximum muscle fibers and promote deep work. The recovery phase will be there to maximize your muscle's recovery, it will still contract, but at more moderate frequencies and intensities studied for maximum efficiency. Better recovery will allow better assimilation of the work during the corresponding phase.
